Wrong Way Head-On Collision On Interstate 75 Injures Four In Sarasota

Nokomis Florida – Florida Highway Patrol has announced that four people are injured after a head-on collision on Interstate I-75 at Mile Marker 195 Wednesday Night.

According to the report by FHP, the fatal crash began as a van driven by a 69 year-old-man from Port Charlotte, Florida was traveling Northbound on Interstate 75 In the wrong direction north of Laurel Road.

A second vehicle, a sport utility with a 50 year-old-woman from North Port, Florida with a 15-year-old female passenger from North Port, Florida, and a 21-year-old male passenger from North Port, Florida was also traveling south on Interstate 75 in the far left lane approaching Laurel Road in Venice.

A third vehicle, a sedan driven by an 18-year-old female from Saint Petersburg, Florida with a 19-year-old female passenger from Saint Petersburg, Florida, and a 20-year-old female passenger also from Saint Petersburg, Florida were traveling south on Interstate 75, in the left lane, directly behind the sport utility vehicle.

As the second vehicle was lawfully traveling on I-75, they encountered the wrong-way driver traveling in the van. Unable to avoid a collision, the front of the van collided with the front of the sport utility vehicle in a head-on crash.

The force of the collision then redirected the van into the path of the oncoming sedan, causing the front of the van to crash into the front of the sedan.

FHP has stated that the crash remains under investigation by authorities, with no details about why the driver of the van entered the interstate going the wrong direction.
