PALMETTO – A tragic accident on US-19 Friday night claimed the life of a 73-year-old bicyclist from Palmetto, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at approximately 9:17 PM near the intersection of US-19 and 61st Street East. FHP reported that a sedan, driven by a 26-year-old Tampa man, was traveling northbound in the left lane of US-19, approaching the intersection.
At the same time, the bicyclist was stopped at the stop sign at 61st Street East and US-19. For reasons still under investigation, the bicyclist entered the intersection, directly into the path of the oncoming sedan.
The front of the sedan collided with the bicyclist and his bicycle. The bicyclist was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the sedan was uninjured.
The Florida Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the crash.
