BRADENTON – Florida Highway Patrol announced A tragic hit-and-run accident on Wednesday night claimed the life of a 62-year-old pedestrian. The crash occurred at approximately 10:32 PM on US-41 (14th Street West) near 66th Avenue West.
FHP reports that an 18-year-old Bradenton man was driving a sport utility vehicle heading northbound on US-41 on the middle lane approaching the intersection with 66th Avenue West.
At the same time, a 62-year-old man from Sacramento California was walking on foot with his bicycle, traveling eastward on US-41 attempting to cross the northbound lanes, also near the intersection with 66th Avenue West.
At 10:32 PM, the SUV encountered the man crossing and the vehicle crashed into the pedestrian. The collision fatally injured the 62-year-old man, who authorities pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash.
The FHP report states that the driver initially stopped and briefly checked on the pedestrian before fleeing the crash scene. Later, the driver returned to the site of the accident and was arrested by authorities for leaving the scene of a crash involving death. He was booked into the Manatee County Jail.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of Florida laws regarding crashes involving injuries or fatalities. All drivers have a legal obligation to stop, provide aid, and give their information.
