MANATEE COUNTY – Florida Highway Patrol has reported that an unidentified driver has fled the scene of an auto accident in Palmetto Monday night.
The crash took place as a Van driven by an unknown driver was traveling north on US 41 in Palmetto north of the intersection with 49th Street East Monday night.
Following behind the van was a sport utility vehicle driven by a 70-year-old man from Ruskin Florida.
At 10:52 PM, the SUV collided with the rear of the van, injuring the driver of the SUV.
After being struck by the SUV, the driver of the van exited the vehicle and fled the scene on foot.
Damage from the crash caused the van to begin leaking diesel fuel onto the roadway, creating a hazard that forced the closure of US 41 as the spill was contained and cleaned up.
The driver of the SUV sustained minor injuries during the crash, and FHP has stated the whereabouts of the driver of the van are unknown at this time.
