VENICE β Authorities are investigating after a deadly crash with multiple fatalities and injuries Sunday. Florida Highway Patrol announced that two people were killed and one person seriously injured after being involved in a crash on US 41 Sunday afternoon.
The crash took place as a 31-year-old man from San Antonio Florida was driving a sedan heading north on US 41, in the right lane approaching the intersection with Seminole Drive.
Also traveling in the sedan were two passengers, a 37-year-old man from Alachua Florida, and a 23-year-old man from Gainesville Florida.
As the sedan approached the intersection, a Sport Utility Vehicle driven by an 80-year-old man from Venice, with an 80-year-old woman from Venice was traveling Eastbound on W Seminole approaching the same intersection with US 41 (Tamiami Trail).
At approximately 1:20 PM, both vehicles entered the intersection at the same time, as a result, the front of the SUV crashed into the left side of the sedan.
After being hit with a side impact the sedan then continued on crashing into a traffic control cabinet, control mast, and finally a sign before coming to a stop.
First responders pronounced the 31-year-old man from San Antonio Florida, and the 37-year-old man from Alachua Florida deceased at the scene of the crash.
The 23-year-old man from Gainsville was seriously injured in the crash and take to a local hospital for treatment.
Both the driver and passenger of the SUV suffered minor injuries in the crash.
The initial report of the crash explicitly states that βThe investigation remains ongoing, to determine which vehicle entered the intersection on green traffic signal.β
Whatever the legal outcome of this tragic accident, we urge all drivers to always stay vigilant when on the roads, especially on high-traffic roads like US 41, all it takes is being distracted or one small mistake for the worst to happen.
