The Dangers of Left-Turn Crashes for Motorcyclists
Left-turn crashes are a leading cause of accidents involving motorcycles. Tragically, these collisions are often preventable with better awareness and caution.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):
- 42% of all crashes involving motorcycles and other vehicles occur when the other vehicle is making a left turn.
- Motorcyclists are nearly 28 times more likely to die in traffic accidents per mile traveled compared to occupants of passenger vehicles.
We Urge Drivers To Always:
- Look twice. Before committing to a turn, ensure there are no oncoming motorcycles, pedestrians, or other vehicles.
- Prioritize safety. Take an extra moment to double-check for smaller, harder-to-see vehicles like motorcycles.
- Be patient. Waiting a few extra seconds can prevent a lifetime of regret.
Motorcyclists are especially vulnerable on the road, and a split-second decision can have devastating consequences. Let’s all commit to safer driving practices to protect all road users.
